NITTANY LION CLUB TAPS ICE HOCKEY COACH JOE BATTISTA AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
March 27, 2006

Joe Battista, who led the Penn State Icers to six national championships, has been named Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Battista brings proven leadership and remarkable success to his new post, compiling a record of 512-120-27 as head coach of the Icers for the past 19 years. The Icers captured ACHA national titles in 1990, '98, 2000, '01, '02 and '03 and were ACHA runners-up six times, including each of the past three seasons.

The Nittany Lion Club, composed of Penn State alumni and friends of Intercollegiate Athletics, was established in 1961 to create greater interest in and financial support for Penn State varsity athletics. The more than 19,000 members of the Nittany Lion Club make possible grant-in-aid support for more than 500 student-athletes and provide operational support for Penn State's 29 varsity sport program, including 15 men's and 14 women's teams.

"I am moving into one of the best jobs I could ask for as a Penn State alumnus and former Lion Ambassador," said Battista, who will begin his new duties on April 10. "I've been fortunate to have been involved in Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics since 1978. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to build on the relationships I already have with so many loyal Penn State alumni and fans. I am excited to represent the University and to continue the traditions of the Nittany Lion Club. I bleed "Blue and White" and can't think of a better opportunity to serve my alma mater, our student-athletes and the Penn State faithful!"
Battista attended Penn State as an undergraduate where he was an original member of the Lion Ambassadors, President of the Ice Hockey Club, Vice President of Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, and a volunteer for The Second Mile. He was a standout defenseman for the Icers from 1978-82. Battista graduated from the Smeal College of Business with a degree in marketing in 1983.

Upon graduation, he was an assistant to the Marketing Director for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins for three years before joining the coaching ranks at Kent State University and Culver Military Academy (Culver, Ind.) and as a USA Hockey Player Development and Coaching Certification instructor.

A Pittsburgh native, Battista was named head coach at Penn State for the 1987-88 season. In his 19 years, he compiled a winning percentage of .800 and captured six ACHA National Titles with no losing seasons. He was named ACHA Division 1 Coach of the Year twice (1999-2000 and 2001-02) and during the 2005-06 season won his 500th game with a 6-5 decision over Arizona State. A member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Battista has become a highly recognized member of the University community, regularly sought after as a motivational speaker. His nickname, "JoeBa", is similar to one referring to another legendary Penn State coach.

Top-ranked Icers fall to #2 Rhode Island Rams in game two
University Park, PA – February 4, 2006

The Icers (23-6-2) played for a sold-out crowd in the Greenburg Ice Pavilion this afternoon for game two in the weekend series against the No. 2 ranked University of Rhode Island (29-1-3). After Penn State’s devastating 2-1 OT loss last night, the Icers were fighting for redemption, but again came up short, 4-3.

URI’s Matt Loftus lit up the board just 17 seconds into the game, sliding the puck past Penn State’s Chris Matteo. He was assisted by Tyler Reinhardt. The Icers did not allow URI to keep the lead for long. Penn State’s Nate Obringer (20) scored on the power play (3:21) with help from Keith Jordan and Luke DeLorenzo, evening the score, 1-1. But, yet again, the Rams took the lead when Ben Herring scored at the 8:19 mark. He was assisted by Cory Pinheiro. The Icers’ Like Walker (8) was able to tie up the game, 2-2, before the end of the first period (18:17). He was assisted by Paul Zodtner and Jordan.

In the second period, URI was able to take back their lead with a goal from Mike Curran (3:09) who was assisted by Loftus. The score advanced, 3-2. Penn State was not about to give up. Tying up the game this time was DeLorenzo (33) on the power play (17:18). He was assisted by Jordan.

Halfway through the third period (9:28), URI moved back into the lead when Bill McKiernan got the puck past Matteo to end the scoring. He was assisted by Eric Hogberg.

Penn State goalie Chris Matteo stopped 24 of 28 URI’s shots in 49:28 of play-action. Penn State’s Paul Mammola took over the goal-tending duties with 9:32 to go in the third period. He was successful on all three shots he faced. URI goalie Anthony Feyock was successful on 30 of the 33 shots he faced and made 81 saves on the weekend. Rhode Island controversially one-ups the Icers in O.T., PSU winning streak snapped
University Park, PA – February 3, 2006

Within a two-second reach from its 18th-consecutive victory, the No. 1 Penn State Icers fall in sudden death overtime to the No. 2 University of Rhode Island Rams, 2-1, in front of a hyped up and sold out Greenberg Ice Pavilion crowd Friday night. The Rams’ victory improves them to 4-1-2 over the past two years against the Icers.

At the conclusion of the opening two periods, the game remained scoreless but had plenty of electricity, as Penn State (23-5-2) and Rhode Island (28-1-3) delivered thunderous, bone-crushing body checks. A dramatic third period was staged for this high intensity match-up, which had its scoreless name slashed after PSU freshman forward Frank Berry scored his 20th goal of the season just 53 seconds after the puck was dropped to give the Icers a 1-0 advantage. Berry’s goal was assisted by freshman forward Lukas DeLorenzo (31) and freshman defenseman Steve Thurston (13).

In an eerily coincidental moment in the game – think back to Penn State’s football game vs. Michigan in Ann Arbor - two seconds were put back on the game clock and as the clock struck double-zero and the horn sounded the end of the game, Rams’ junior forward Eric Hogberg was able to score the game-tying goal, which was his 11th of the campaign, which was assisted by junior forward Tyler Reinhardt.

Penn State’s devastating loss took place just 49 seconds into the sudden death frame as URI junior forward Mike Curran netted his 20th of the year. The game-winning goal was assisted by freshman forward Cory Manley.

Penn State goalie Paul Mammola suffered his third loss of the season (9-3-2) with 29 saves on 31 shots faced. Rhode Island goalie Anthony Feyock looked like his All-American self with 51 saves on 52 shots overall. FALL SEMESTER RELEASE - University Park, Pa - December 24, 2005

At the commencement of the 2005-06 campaign, the Penn State Nittany Lion Icers began the season ranked second in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) and looked true to form ripping off three convincing wins to open the season. A remarkable road victory at NCAA Division I Robert Morris University (Pa.), 3-2, was sandwiched between a couple of convincing wins against Mercyhurst, 8-0, and Washington and Jefferson, 5-1.

But following the impeccable start to the season, Penn State (14-4-2) came down with a case of the Friday night woes, going 0-3-2 from Oct. 14 - Nov. 11 on those dreaded winless nights. Overall, during that time frame, the Icers went 3-4-2, including back to back losses for the first time in 63 games thanks to #3 Rhode Island and 2nd ranked rival-Ohio, and dropped them to fourth overall in the ACHA rankings. Following their demotion in the rankings, the Icers have ripped off eight-straight victories (including a redeeming 5-4 win over Ohio in the Saturday match-up). Over the Thanksgiving break at the East-West Showcase, the Icers stunned host University of Michigan-Dearborn in a 9-0 win that Coach Joe Battista called "our most complete victory of the season". The Icers dominated the tournament with an 8-3 win over Eastern Michigan and a 6-2 win over Western Michigan in addition to the 9-0 win over #7 Michigan-Dearborn.

The Icers are on a full head of steam as they prepare to travel to the Arizona State Desert Classic January 5-8 where they take on #5 Iowa State, #11 Arizona and #10 Arizona State. The Icers return home January 13 and 14 to host the reigning national champions, Illinois, who beat the Icers in last year's title game 4-3. It was Penn State's eighth-straight championship game appearance.

The Icers' leading scorer is junior-forward Mike McMullen, who has racked up 18 goals and 19 assists (37 points) during the fall semester. The highlight of McMullen's season occurred when he recorded his first career hat trick against the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Other notables for the Icers this season have been freshman scoring sensation Luke DeLorenzo, who is second on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 17 assists (34 points) in 16 games played and one of the talented 14 new, young faces for Penn State; and the goalkeeping-duo Chris Matteo and Paul Mammola, who both held the #6 Lindenwood Lions scoreless on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Mammola played the Friday night game rejecting all 32 shots he faced and Matteo denied all 25 shots fired his way. It was the first time since January 2001 that Penn State posted back to back shutouts.

The next Icers victory will be a milestone for head coach Joe Battista, who is in his 19th year at Penn State and is one win shy of 500 during his tenure in Happy Valley.

The Icers were the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) National Runner-Up in 2005, playing in a record 8th straight national title game. This year, the Icers face-off against 13 ACHA tournament teams from last year, including hosting defending national champions Illinois who defeated the Icers 4-3 in the 2005 title game.

The Icers open against in-state foe Mercyhurst College (#13 ACHA, 27-6-0 in 2004-05) on Friday, October 7, 2005 at 9:00 P.M. at the Penn State Ice Rink. The home slate also includes arch rival Ohio University (#3 ACHA, 29-8-5), Rhode Island (#4 ACHA, 37-4-1), Arizona State (#10 ACHA, 18-8-0), Lindenwood University (#5 ACHA, 23-10-0), Duquesne Universtiy (#9 ACHA, 27-5-1), Delaware (#18 ACHA, 20-17-0), Michigan-Dearborn (#6 ACHA, 20-18-1) and Canadian rival St. Clair College from Windsor, Ontario.

Penn State also had a new face on the coach’s staff as former Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) Assistant Coach and Mercyhurst graduate Matt Bertani joins head coach Joe Battista’s staff.

Battista enters his 19th season with a record of 477 wins, closing in on the 500 win plateau. Battista believes this will be “one of the most exciting and challenging schedules we’ve ever played.” Gone is the Icers All-Time Leading Scorer Kevin Jaeger and two time All-American defenseman Joe Maglaque.

According to Battista, the Icers might be younger and more inexperienced that in the past, but the will also be faster, more skilled, and deeper at all positions. “It will be a matter of getting as a team and getting everyone on the same page with our systems.” Season Tickets are available by calling 814-863-2037. Single game tickets go on sale September 30, 2005.
